The Search Engine Google is showing this Doodle in few Countries for celebrating Nelly Sachs'127th Birthday. Nelly Sachs was a Jewish German-Swedish poet and playwright. Her experiences resulting from the rise of the Nazis in World War II transformed her into a heartbreaking spokeswoman for the grief of her fellow Jews. Nelly Sachs was born in Berlin on December 10, 1891. She was the daughter of a wealthy manufacturer, grew up in a fashionable area of Berlin. She studied music and dancing and at an early age began writing poetry. Sachs and her mother escaped on the last flight from Nazi Germany to Sweden, a week before Sachs was scheduled to report to a concentration camp. They settled in Sweden and Sachs became a Swedish citizen in 1952. After her escape to Sweden, Nelly Sachs took up the study of Swedish and devoted much of her time to the translation of many Swedish poets. Nelly Sachs’s career as a poet of note started only after her emigration when she was nearly fifty years old. Although her poems are written in a keenly modern style, with an abundance of lucid metaphors, they also intone the prophetic language of the Old Testament. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1966, and she died in 1970.
